The idea for the painting of SOLARIS was born after I watched the movie “Margin Call - The Big Crash”. It`s crazy, even movies like these don`t have anything to do with art, it`s the way the characters move and communicate with each other, that inspired me a lot.
The primary figures are the actors Paul Bettany and Stanley Tucci, who talk about how to deal with getting fired. The big questions come up: What to do next? What are terminologies like loyalty worth after you invested years of energy and knowledge to build a huge company, but the management decides to fire you? Philosophical questions come up: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? What can we hope for? How should we live?
The connection between both is interesting: Although they are not close friends, it`s the company that brings them together, and they recognize how well they understand each other. If they had met somewhere else, they might have become close friends. Now, at this moment, they have to find an arrangement. They have to talk to each other, which makes it look dramatic. But there`s comedy in all kinds of drama as well. Some kind of absurdity.
Other sources of inspiration:
Solaris = sun = symbol of progress and development
"Solaris" = science fiction novel by Stanisław Lem, 1961
Solaris = computer operating system from Oracle
Astronomy (planets, moons, asteroids)
