The idea of this painting was already born in 2022. I didn't touch the canvas for 2 years. It was so much fun to finish it in the last 2 weeks.
I had a huge mural in mind, rounded by different graffiti tags. I love the fact to hang that above your couch, bringing some street culture into your home.
It seems unspectacular, but the man in the picture is actually black. The colors make it impossible to tell what race the man belongs to. We are all human. It is almost an unintentional symbol of international understanding. And against racism. I only realized it while I was painting. This is what Rick Rubin describes as the creative process: You create something without knowing what the end result will be.
The word "Tohu wa bohu" comes from Hebrew and is mentioned in the Bible right at the beginning of the creation story. In Genesis (1:2) the translated version says: And the earth was without form and void. In the Hebrew version, this is replaced by Tohuwabohu, which literally means darkness and abyss. Tohuwabohu originally describes the state of the earth before the beginning of creation.
In Germany we use this word to describe a state of chaos. That's what all the graffiti tags symbolise: Our ongoing thoughts. And yet, it is the job of the artist to bring a certain structure into such a composition.
Dedicated to my dear friend Adam Hernandez.
Rest in peace, homes! 🖤
